Dear Mr. Weiss:
Please accept this letter as the State of Maryland's formal request to be provided a stockpile of potassium iodide (KI) tablets for the residents within 10 miles of a commercial nuclear power facility.
The State of Maryland requests 172,000 65 milligram KI tablets and 7,000 130 milligram KI tablets.
Maryland is currently impacted by emergency planning zones for the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant and the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. Population estimates for these two areas are 60,000 (Calvert Cliffs) and 26,000 (Peach Bottom) for a total of 86,000 potentially affected residents.
These estimates are based on 2000 Census data, recent evacuation time estimate studies, updates from the Maryland Office of Planning and information from local officials. The 7,000 additional 130 milligram tablets will be provided to officials at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, which is partially located within the Calvert Cliffs emergency planning zone. The State's 2001 KI request did not include the full population of the Naval Air Station; installation officials have subsequently requested to be included in KI distribution efforts. The State supports this request in the interest of enhancing existing planning efforts around Calvert Cliffs.
