OF MARCH 31, 2004 MEETING REGARDING THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR THE POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT On March 31, 2004, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff (the staff) conducted a public information session to describe the license renewal process on Point Beach Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2. The purpose of the meeting was to provide information describing the license renewal process and how the public can participate. The meeting was held at the Two Creeks Town Hall, Two Rivers, WI. A list of meeting attendees is provided in Enclosure 1, and the meeting agenda is provided in Enclosure 2. A copy of the presentation slides used by the NRC staff are provided in Enclosure 3.
The NRC staff presented slides describing the NRCs license renewal process and how the public can participate in the process. The staff then answered questions from members of the public. These questions range from the role of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS), license renewal staffs proposed review of plant aging issues, to the storage and transportation of radioactive waste from Point Beach to the future repository at Yucca Mountain.
The meeting was attended by local government officials, the state Public Service Commission (PSC) and a variety of Wisconsin-based public interest groups, including Nuke-Watch, the Wisconsin Citizens Utility Board (CUB), and the Physicians for Social Responsibility. The staff was very successful in addressing the questions of members of the public.
