Ashficld, Ma. 01330 March 29, 2004 Mr. Nils Diaz, Chairman US Nuclear Relgulatory Commission Washington D.C. 2005-0001
Dear Mr. Diaz,
I have just learned that the request to up the energy production of the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant by 20% has been approved by the Vermont Public Service Board. In the same breath I have learned that:
- 1. the hazards of pushing the production of this elderly plant beyond what it Vvas designed for are significant.
- 2. there is no backup in case of a breakdown in the cooling system, and
- 3. the worst scenario would involve an evacuation of an area in Vermont, New Hampshire, and western Massachusetts, the size of the state of Pennsylvania.
The most startling information this morning is that the Vermont Public Service Board is preventcd by fcdcral law from taking safcty factors into consideration whcn they makc thcsc decisions! What is happening to our public MIND?! All this Homeland "Security", but approving boards don't have to take public safety into consideration when dealing aith matters that could destroy whole regions?
Mr. Diaz, the Nuclear Regulation Commission has yet to give permission for this upgrade in power production of the Vermont Yankee plant. I beg you to use your influence to bring sanity into this decision. To permit this upgrade is risking incredible disaster in three New England states, for just a little more energy, when we should be urgently focussed on conserving energy and protecting populations.
Sincerely yours, Mariel Kinsey
