Dear Nils:
I am writing to urge you to conduct an independent engineering assessment at the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant before permitting any uprate of the facility.
I represent the 1 st Congressional District of Massachusetts and many of my constituents live within the fallout area of Vermont Yankee. I am therefore very concerned about plans to allow this 32 year-old facility to increase the number of fuel rods in its reactor core by 20%.
The Vermont Public Service Board requested that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission conduct an independent assessment to make sure that this plan would be safe, but I was disappointed to learn that your agency recently denied their request. My constituents and their Vermont neighbors deserve every assurance that Vermont Yankee's plan is completely safe and feasible. I strongly believe that only an independent assessment, in conjunction with your findings, can provide this.
Therefore, I am asking that you reconsider your decision before moving forward on approving Vermont Yankee's plan.
Thank you for your consideration of my request. I look forward to hearing from you.
