STATE OF ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH Donald E. Williamson, MD State Health Officer March 22, 2004 Eric Weiss, Chief Emergency Preparedness and Health Physics Section U.S. NRC Washington, D.C. -20555
Dear Mr. Weiss:
As you know, we concluded that we will incorporate the use of potassium iodide (KI) as a supplemental protective measure for the general public in the emergency planning zones (EPZs) surrounding the nuclear power plants in Alabama. The use of KI will serve as a supplement to sheltering and/or evacuation in case of an radiological emergency at one of the nuclear power plants in our State. We are requesting the NRC to provide'additional 65 mg KI tablets for the children in our EPZs.
In Alabama, we have two active nuclear power plant sites: Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant near Athens, Alabama, in Limestone County; and Farley Nuclear Plant near Dothan, Alabama, in Houston County. Based on the latest available information, the population of children in the EPZ surrounding Browns Ferry is 10,050 and the population of children in the EPZ surrounding Farley is 2,775 for a total population of 12,825 children in Alabama EPZs.
In Alabama, the contact person authorized to receive the KI is Tonya Appleyard. Please ship the KI to Tonya Appleyard, Emergency Planning Branch, Office of Radiation Control, Alabama Department of Public Health, 201 Monroe Street, Suite 700, Montgomery. Alabama 36104. She may be reached by telephone at 334 206-5391.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Sincerely, Krksey E. Whatley, Director Office of Radiation Control KEW/MGC The RSA Tower. 201 Monroe Street. Montgomery, AL 36104 P.O. Box 303017
