M R R - E E - ~ ~ ~ 09: 40 p.a4 January 21,2004 Honorable Nils J. Dim Chaim;an U.S. Nuclear Rqplatory Comrnissiop Wa~hingto~~,DC 20555.

Dear Mr. Diaz,

Please find enclosed 12 letters from concerned citizens 'in the New York Metropolitan Area calling for $he cIosure.of Indian Point's two nuclear reactors. We hope that you take the time to read the personal thoughts that were shared..

Riverkeeper, dorig. with 'an incre+ing amount of familes, cobunities,' and gqvemment, business, cjvic and en+ironmental leaders throughout the tri-state area, remains deeply

  • concerned about the Ask Indian Point poses to'our. region. As you know, Riverkeeper has not been, nor are we now, an anti-nuclear group as such,. Gth~ugh we have taken Indian Point to task in the past for its fish kips and other detrimental cooling water impacts.

However, a catastrophic release. of radiationltorn IP, caused by a temrist attack or nuclear accident, would likely aevastate the Hudson River ecology and contaminate, perhaps'permanently, the New York City/Westchester.water supply - precisely the two resources we seek to protect.

Indian Point has bedome &risk to our region3 residents, e-wnorny and 'enviroyent. This -

is a risk we are not prepared to take, With Indian Point shutdown, the ecologi'Cal inkpity of the Hudson will be more secure, as will.our water supply and the 'twent$-million people wh6 live within fifty miles of the plant.

Sincerely, 3

Alex Mtthieissen Hudson Riverkeeper

Dear Dr. Diaz,

As you know, your agency and independent nuclear safety experts alike have acknowledged that a successfd attack on a plant like Indian Point could lead to a catastrophic release of radiation causing tens of thousands of acute and long-term cancer deaths as far away as 500 miles or mote.

The NRC policy states that a nuclear power plant should not be able to operate without a workable emergency plan, Further, the Witt report, commissioned by Governor Paw. concludes that the current evacuation plan is unworkable, Therefore, I move chat the NRC withdraw Indian Point's operating permit immediately.

immediate action on the decommissioning md closure of Indian Point nuclear power plant.
