Dear Mr. Kuo:

Thank you for requesting comments from our office concerning the possible effects of the referenced project on cultural resources.

Our comments are required by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, and its implementing regulations, 36 CFR 800:

"Protection of Historic Properties".

We agree with the NRC staff's determination that the impact of license renewal on historical and archaeological resources is small and that additional mitigation is not warranted.

We also are in agreement with the statement that "Intact archaeological sites could be present within these undeveloped areas" within the facility in the Genaric Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants, Supplement 17, Regarding Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Units 2 and 3 (2-44).

Archaeological surveys to locate unrecorded sites should be undertaken if future construction projects are located in previously undisturbed areas within the facility.

If you have any questions, please contact David J. Halpin, Staff Archaeologist, at 217-785-4998.

Sincerely, Anne_ E. Haaker Deputy Stat e Historic Preservation Officer AEH
