Dear Chaiiuinan Diaz:

We are writing in regard to the proposed 20% power uprate at the Entergy Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, Vernon, VT. We strongly support an independent safety assessment (ISA) of the Vermont Yankee plant. We are especially concerned because, having been "grandfathered" in by the NRC in 1972, Vermont Yankee's obsolete design could not be built or licensed today.

An ISA, which would determine what safety regulations Vermont Yankee is in compliance with and which ones they are not in compliance with, should be undertaken before either the NRC or the Vermont Public Service Board make a decision in this matter. Robert Sherman, the Vermont state nuclear engineer, has also expressed concern about this issue.

We strongly urge you to support an ISA for Vermont Yankee. It is essential that we be fully informed on a matter of such critical importance to the safety of citizens in Vermont and neighboring states. Thank you.

Sincerely yours, Janet and Walter Schwarz t
