01/22/04 Honorable Nils J. Diaz Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
Washington, D.C.20555
Dear:
Nils J. Diaz I am Wiliam Vasquez,.an Ossining High School student. I write to you because in the school, we are investigating about "Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant." In the school we had a debate and, in the debate, the most students said we should close Indian Point.
More than 20 million people live within a 50-mile radius of Indian Point. That's more than any other nuclear plant in the country. Given the population density and the fact that nuclear plants like Indian Point are known to be targets for terrorist attacks. A worst-case scenario accident at Indian Point, with a meltdown and complete failure of the containment structure, could lead to about 50,000 deaths in the year, according to a study conducted the Sandia National Laboratory for the NRC.
I want to know, what plan you have in an emergency?
Do you have a good protection plan for the Nuclear Plant?
Thank you, Iiam Vasquez
