QUAD CITIES NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT 1 - SCHEDULE TO RESOLVE MISSING PIECE OF STEAM DRYER
Dear Mr. Crane:
By letter dated November 28, 2003, Exelon Generation Company (EGC) identified that a portion of the Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1 damaged steam dryer outer hood bank was missing. Despite extensive efforts, the missing section, which measured approximately 6 and 1/2 by 9 inches and 1/2 inch thick, could not be located. Your letter provided a lost parts analysis for the missing piece of the steam dryer and your determination that it was safe to operate Unit 1 until the next refueling outage which is currently scheduled for March 2005.
Staff from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) discussed their comments on this lost parts analysis with your staff on December 16, 2003, and we are awaiting your response. By letter dated January 22, 2004, you stated that EGC will submit a letter to the NRC documenting our decision as to whether to continue the effort to locate and retrieve the missing dryer material by August 31, 2004.
If EGC decides not to retrieve the missing piece, the NRC staff expects to review your safety analysis describing the acceptability of operating Quad Cities Unit 1 beyond the next refueling outage. We request that the safety analysis and any associated license amendment request be submitted to NRC as early as possible to allow the NRC staff sufficient time to complete our review.
