SUMMARY

OF AUGUST 7, 2003, MEETING WITH SOUTH CAROLINA ELECTRIC & GAS TO DISCUSS VIRGIL C. SUMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION RELIEF REQUESTS AND INSPECTION ISSUES On August 7, 2003, the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff met with representatives of South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G), Wesdyne, Electric Power Research Institute, and Westinghouse at the NRC Headquarters in Rockville, Maryland. SCE&G requested the meeting to discuss the Refueling Outage 14 (RF-14) related relief requests and NRCs expectations related to the A hot leg issues. The licensee discussed relief for inspection of dissimilar metal welds on Reactor Vessel nozzle piping and other 10-year Inservice Inspection activities scheduled to occur during RF-14. The Inspection methods for the hot and cold legs were also discussed.

This meeting was classified as a Category 1 meeting, which provided an opportunity for members of the public to communicate with the NRC staff after the business portion, but before the meeting was adjourned. However, there were no members of the public in attendance. is a list of meeting attendees and Attachment 2 is a copy of SCE&Gs handout distributed during the meeting. The handout can be found on the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System at ML040080284.

The NRC staff noted that the above meeting was beneficial in gaining an understanding of SCE&Gs plans regarding the desired relief requests and activities.
