RE: Farley Nuclear Station License Renewal W

As Planning Director of the City of Dothan, Alabama, I have had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the NRC and others involved in evaluating the Southern Nuclear Operating Company's application to renew the operating licenses for the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant license renewal application.

This letter, however, is not written in my capacity as the City of Dothan Planning Director, but rather as a private citizen. I have lived in Dothan for over 28 years. During that time, I have had the opportunity to be involved in several community organizations, including serving on the Board of-Directors of the Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity, the Dothan Landmarks Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the Wiregrass United Way.

My involvement with these organizations has made it evident to me how important the Farley Nuclear Plant is to the civic and community life of Dothan, Houston County and the surrounding Wiregrass Area. In some instances that impact can be easily calculated. For example, the Farley Nuclear Plant's employee United Way campaign is one of the largest in Houston County. Just as importantly, many of the employees of the Farley-Nuclear Plant have been involved in leadership positions in the community, ranging from serving on the Dothan City School Board to chairing the Houston County Board of Directors of the Wiregrass United Way. While it maybe impossible to quantify the value of these types of contributions, there is no doubt that the loss of the men and women working at Farley would represent a great loss to the civic and community life of our area.
