The Wiregrass Area United Way Food Bank would like to express its support for the license renewal of the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant.
The Farley Plant has an obvious economic impact on the Wiregrass Area through the taxes paid and the retail impact of its employees; the Food Bank would like to bring attention to the impact of the Farley employees that might go unnoticed.
The Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) has supported the efforts of the Food Bank in numerous ways. Every spring the Food Bank has its major fundraiser through a golf tournament, APSO has been a monetary contributor to this event. Every fall the employees organize a food drive at area schools that has averaged over three tons of food each year. They also volunteer their time to pack bags and deliver groceries that are distributed through our Brown Bag Program for Senior Citizens.
The value of these employee contributions cannot be measured in dollars and cents. The employee activities are touching residents of the Wiregrass in a personal way. Such as, a conversation with a home bound senior citizen, education of school children that might not be aware of the hunger problems in the Wiregrass and food donations that can make a difference during our busiest time, the holidays.
The Farley Plant and its employees are truly good neighbors and there would be a tremendous void if the plant were not here.
