SUBJECT:

EVALUATION OF STEAM GENERATOR INSERVICE INSPECTION

SUMMARY

REPORT, BYRON, UNIT 1 (TAC NO. MC0962)

By letters dated March 28 and June 13, 2002, Exelon Generation Company, LLC (Exelon) submitted a steam generator (SG) tube repair report and inservice inspection summary report respectively. These reports are related to the steam generator inspections performed during the Cycle 11 refueling outage (spring 2002) in accordance with the plants technical specifications (TS).

Byron Station Unit 1 has four Babcock & Wilcox replacement SGs which were installed during Cycle 8, each one containing 6633 thermally treated Inconel-690 U-bend tubes. The tubes are hydraulically expanded into the tubesheet and supported with stainless steel lattice grid structures and fan bars. During the Cycle 11 refueling outage, the licensee inspected the full length of 54 percent of the inservice tubes in all four SGs with a bobbin coil probe. This inspection consisted of 100 percent of the peripheral tubes with the exception of the tubes under the manipulator base plate, and 50 percent of the interior tubes. In addition, using a three-coil rotating probe, 25 percent of the tubes in each SG were inspected at the hot leg top of the tubesheet expansion transition region. Exelon also performed diagnostic examinations using a three-coil rotating probe of all bobbin signals. Lastly, a visual inspection was performed of all previously installed tube plugs.

As a result of the inspection, no tubes were plugged or repaired. Twelve tubes were determined to contain fan bar wear. These indications are summarized as; five in SG A, six in SG B, one in SG C, and none in SG D. The through wall depths ranged from 2 percent to 8 percent, which was less than the 40 percent through wall technical specification repair limit.

Based on the review of the information provided in the two submittals, the NRC staff concluded that Exelon provided the information required in accordance with the Byron TS and no additional follow-up is required at this time.

Sincerely,

/RA/
