Concern About Wackenhut's Record at Nuclear Power Plants Chairman, Nuclear Regulatory Commission Dr. Nils J. Diaz Washington, DC 20555

Dear Chairman,

Nuclear Regulatory Commission Diaz, I am writing to express my deep concern about the fitness of the Wackenhut Corporation to provide security at our nation's nuclear power facilities, given the shocking revelations about Wackenhut's lax security procedures at the Indian Point #2 nuclear power plant located outside of New York City.

According to a report compiled by Indian Point #2 owner, the Entergy Corporation: fewer than one in five Wackenhut security officers felt prepared to defend the plant, physical agility training was "extremely lax",qualifying exams for carrying weapons had been rigged so guards could pass; and, Wackenhut provided false information to plant management and N.R.C.

investigators.

The fact that Wackenhut cut corners and misled investigators about the security at Indian Point raises serious questions about the company's ability to provide security at such sensitive, dangerous sites. Wackenhut officers in the U.S. who have raised questions about security vulnerabilities in nuclear power plants have faced discipline, suspension and even termination. And last year the Nuclear Regulatory Commission identified three Wackenhut-guarded nuclear power plants for in-depth review due to the high number of security-related employee allegations.

With Wackenhut under contract to provide security at thirty other nuclear plants, I am very concerned about the frightening consequences of Wackenhut's lax security procedures for the safety of the general public and for our overall Homeland Security.

In accordance with these concerns, I ask you to please provide me with any information you may have about the Wackenhut Corporation's track record that justifies their continued role as security providers at such highly sensitive nuclear sites.

Sincerely, Susan Prather Box 681 El Cerrito, California 94530
