Sandy Sucky Look me 'in the eye and tell me Davis-Besse is safe My name is Sandy Sucky and I live in OH.
I am extremely concerned about public safety regarding the risks of Nuclear Power Plants. I know the sacrifice of giving up a child to leukemia and a husband to cancer.
Sometimes we do not know the cause as in the case of my beautiful dauhter Kelly who died 3 weeks before her 8th birthday after living with leukemia for 7 years. In cases such as Chernobel we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that a core meltdown causes injuries and immediate deaths as well as a major increase in cancer deaths over a period of years. It is not worth the risk for even one valuable life. We must find safer methods of producing power to ensure the safety of all of us and our families. Please keep the Davis Bessie nuclear reactor closed.
Sandy Sucky

Dear Mr. Dyer:
I am extremely concerned for my relatives, friends; and neighbors when I think what could happen if the Davis-Besse Plant should reopen causing nuclear damage to our environment.
Please explain to me why The Davis-Besse nuclear plant should not remain closed.
Do not the risks outway the benefits? Who would benefit? What are the benefits?
I am looking forward to an answer from you regarding this matter as soon as possible.
I implore you to keep the Davis-Besse nuclear reactor closed! ! !

Dear Mr. Dyer,
I am writing in regards to the Davi .Bes e nuclea power pl nt. Living in the vicinity of Lake Erie, I am concerned with the safety issues surrounding this facility. I would hope that you are as concerned with the potential Economic and Environmental damages that might occur with the reopening of this plant without guarantees of its safety.
The NRC's top priority should be public safety not the schecule of First Energy. I urge you to keep this nuclear reactor closed.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I would appreciate an immediate response.

Dear Mr. Dyer:
I am concerned about the Davis-Besse Nuclear plant. I live in OH. and I take great pride in my home and the community in which I live. I have a h i l y , and enjoy Lake Erie in the summer months. I am concerned about the most recent closure of the plant and the risks associated with this.
The NRC top priority must be public safety, not First Energy's schedule of opening. Before any opening, please asssure all of us immediately that the safety of the citizens is of foremost interest to you . As I registered nurse here in the community, believe me 1 have seen many devastating illness that could have been avoided had our regulatory government agencies looked to the public interest first and foremost.
1 trust that you will look to the interest of the people when you decide to reopen that nuclear plant again, even though it has had at least two near accidents, or two that we know of Si$rely, 7

Dear Mr. Dyer,
I am writing to you because of concerns that I have regarding Davis-Besse nuclear power plant. Is the plant safe? I am concerned because I live (with my family) within harms way were there to be a major accident. As you know the plant has had two close calls, one in '85 and the other just recently (last March, I think). Please continue to make public safety your first priority and close this plant if the risk to the public outweighs the benefits.

Dear Mr. Dyer:
As a resident of northeast Ohio in fairly close proximity to the Davis-Besse nuclear reactor, I would like to express my concern that every effort be made to ensure the public safety before reopening the reactor. It is obvious from the events of March, 2002 that the safety of the facility has been severely compromised. Additionally, the plant is aging and the technology is out-of -
date.
The health of the human community is at risk as well as the general natural environment, especially our critical water supply. I urge you to proceed with great caution and with paramount consideration for the public welfare. Surely, the interests of power companies should be secondary to that.
I would appreciate the favor of your reply.

Re: Davis-Besse Power Plant Mr. Caldwell, I have taken the time to write this letter so that you may know how I feel about the safety of my family as well as the safety of my community. As you know, when the plant was originally found to be out of compliance with the standards set forth by the NRC the issue was down played. The biggest concern I have is that a company would try to down play such a serious issue, all to save a few pennies. My health is far more important than my pocketbook. Obviously First Energy feels that the bottom line is more important than the publics health. This concerns me. We live in a technologically advanced society so surely we can strive to find alternate forms of energy. We are all aware of the recent terrorist attacks and this creates a large target for them to come after. There are other resources that we can tap into; the sun being one such source. The sun is not scheduled to run out of power for at least another 100 million years, its free and its not able to be targeted by terrorists. Lets put safety and common sense ahead of the bottom line and keep this facility closed.

Dear Mr. CaldweI1:
As a resident of Ohio for over 40 years, I am truly concerned about the fiiture welfae of not only my family and relatives (many of whom live in the direct vicinity of Davis-Besse) but all of Ohios residents who have a right to live without fear of adverse health effects from accidents or catastrophic events that can be prevented.
I urge the NRC to work to insure the public safety by enforcing existing rules and policies.
Davis-Besse must remain closed until all safety issues have been resolved, regardless of any schedule that FirstEnergy would like to keep.
First Energy has not demonstrated the ability to keep this plant operating safely for the past 26 years. Why should they be given more time?

Dear Mr.Dyer,
I reside with my family in OH. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the Davis-Besse nuclear power p t. My concerns primarily relate to the issues of safety that surround the operations of this plant.
I know that nuclear energy can be viewed as an economical and relatively clean source of energy. I am also aware that striving to provide for the energy needs of our rapidly expanding society while keeping costs contained can be challenging. However, public safety should be foremost in our quest for cost-efficient energy. The past record of the Davis-Besse plant has me concerned that public safety is not a foremost concern on the owners agenda. As a result of this, I am requesting that w e h l review and consideration be given before even considering the reopening of this reactor.

Dear Mr. Dyer:
I am writing on behalf of my two small children who are too young to understand the concerns for our city. We live in Ohio, about &iles outside of Cleveland. My wife and I are extremely concerned over the health issues that Davis-Besse could potentially cause if re-opened.
I need not remind you that NRC's top priority be public safety and not the schedule of FirstEnergy. The Davis-Besse nuclear reactor MUST be kept closed for the safety of this whole city, surrounding suburbs and last, but certainly not feast.. .Lake Erie.
NEED I remind you that back in March a 5 x 7 inch hole was discovered on the reactor and what would have happened if not noticed before it burst.. ,the results would have been devastating. Who is to say it won't happen again.. .and go unnoticed. That is a chance NRC cannot afford to take nor one I wish to live near.
I do request an immediate response h m you regarding this issue. A letter can be forwarid to myLaddress

7/7/03 Petition to Regional Administratorames E. Dver
Dear Mr.Dyer,
My family and I are residents of-Oho i and we are deeply concerned about the continued use of the Davis-Besse power plant.
Our concerns are based on the alarming history of the plant including the 1985 incident as well as the near melt down in 2002. Its proximity to the lake as well as its ability to effect dense population zones should something go wrong (asit has already in two known previous instances), is a grave concern.
These factors are not a good combination for a safe or successfuI project.
Please remember that the NRCs number one concern should be the public safety, and not Firstbergys or any other corporations agenda.
As you near the end of your days many years from now, do you want to look
.A back on your life knowing that you have helped to keep this world healthy and beautiful, or will you look back only to see various financial institutions compounding the interest on the corporate profits you helped to facilitate?
Mr.Dyer, you have a unique chance to do something really meaningful with your power. You can actually keep this plant closed and assure our community that a third and possibly catastrophic accident will not happen in the future.
Thank you for you time and consideration. E look forward to your prompt response.

Dear Mr. Caldwell:
old wife, mother of two, CPA and medical manufacturing entrepreneur who lives in Ohio. Quite frankly, considering recent events, I think I and my family live a little too for comfort.
I am a believer in nuclear power, but in my opinion, Davis-Besse and the folks at FirstEnergy blew it. They had a huge public safety responsibility they did not live up to and, in my opinion, the privilege of running a nuclear power plant should be taken away from them.
Please keep Davis-Besse closed. If you lay out the benefits and consequences, it just doesnt make sense to give these folks a second chance - not when the consequences are potentially so great.
Please respond to the address or e-mail indicated above. Thank you.

Dear Mr. Caldwell,
I am concerned about the state of the Davis Besse nuclear reactor and its potential for harming individuals who live near the site. Ido not live extremely close, however, Iam specifically concerned about my family's health due to the proximity of the plant to Lake Erie and our dependence on Lake Erie for drinking water and recreation.
Please continue to keep this nuclear reactor closed due to its potential to harm countless individuals and the surrounding environment. Since there have been two near-misses at this facility in less than two decades, we should continue to question the safety of it.
1 would appreciate a response from the NRC on what actions are being taken to insure this reactor is decommissioned for the safety of the families and the welfare of the area surrounding this facility.

Dear Jim Caldwell,
I am writing in concern of the Davis-Besse nuclear reactor, which I, as well as many others, feel should remain closed until further precautions are taken to avoid a possible public safety disaster in the future.
I understand the NRCs commitment to the FirstEnergy Corporation; however, the people surrounding this nuclear reactor are far more important and must be number one on the priority list. I need not address the possible dangers of a what if accident at the David-Besse facility, because that would be redundant, and I am sure you are klly aware of it.
I also recommend that the public should be better educated on this facility, since fear is usually ignorance and simply most people dont understand this subject matter. Human error is inevitable, and history shows us that very clearly. The fact that there was a 5-by-7 inch hole on the reactor lid is scary enough to most people. The fact that it happened because boric acid had leaked through cracked pipes is even more startling.
People put a lot of faith into the operators of these plants, as we11 as the organizations that maintain that these plants are safe. If we narrowly avoided being the second 3-mile Island, then by all means, the David-Besse nuclear power plant must remain closed.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

James E. Dyer, Regional Administrator U. S.Nuclear Regulatory Commission 801 Warrenville Road Lisle, IL 60532-4351
Dear Mr. Dyer,
Living in the Cleveland area, I am strongly concerned about the safety of my family and community due to the closeness of the Davis-Besse nuclear plant and the threats it poses to the environment.
As a physicist, I strongly think alternative energy sources should obtain a much greater priority for satisfying our energy needs. While potentially nuclear energy plants can be made safe in the short term of their operation, they are ultimately not economically viable because the problem of nuclear waste is as yet unsolved and dumped on future generations.
In any case, the recent horrors of the leak in the Davis-Besse plant and the history of this plant surely calls for the utmost caution. I think it is vitally important that as Regional Administrator you keep the safety of the population as first priority and not the short term economic interests of FirstEnergy. Therefore, I request that you keep the Davis-Besse nuclear reactor closed and ensure its continued safety even when not in operation.
Please, respond to my request at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
&b

James E. Dyer, Regional Administrator U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 801 Warrenville Road Lisle, IL 60532-4351
Dear Mr. Dyer,
As a citizen living on the o
-f Lake Erie I hereby express my concern about the re-activation of the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant.
Past assurances by the NRC and the plants owner about the certain avoidance of future disasters have been premature. I expect you to take very seriously your role as decision maker in the question about re-activating the Davis-Besse power plant, in order to protect our population from the serious and avoidable harm that an accident would cause.
If in your investigations you should discover that the risks of operating the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant is too great for the foreseeable future, I suggest that rather than helping companies to continue to invest in unduly dangerous ways of producing energy we encourage them to invest in such alternatives as wind or solar power. In addition, I would like you to use what power or opportunity you have to encourage citizens to scale down our consumption of electrical power.
I am looking forward to my first great-grandchild before Christmas.
Hopefully he or she will be able to live long and happily enough to make a similar statement in about 70 years.
Yours, sincerely, Eleonore S. Adams

Dear Mr. Dyer,
I live n i- Ohio. A town of nearly 15,000 residents on the shore of Lake Erie. It's located about 55 minutes east of Davis-Besse Nuclear power plant.
I am very concerned that after the narrowly avoided reactor meltdown of 2002 that the NRC is intending to reopen the facility. I am aware of our nation's ever increasing need for cheap and reliable power. One only needs to open a newspaper or weekly news magazine to see this. But when our source of power can potentially kill or permanently injure thousands of people and irrepairably damage the environment; I must be concerned.
In a time when our nuclear power facilities like Davis-Besse are aging, are strategic targets for terrorism, and have always been susceptable to human fallibility; I cannot rationalize this plants continued service when weighed against the risks and potentially disasterous complications. In this situation I can only beseech you to leave the Davis-Besse facility closed.
Ifor one feel that a higher electric bill is an insignificant price to pay for the comfort and security of knowing that my family, friends and neighbors are safe from a situation similar to Three-Mile Island or even worse Chemobyl. I am however more than willing to hear your personal views on this issue. If you would be so kind as to respond at the earliest possible convenience, 1 would be greatly appreciative.
Sincerelv.

Mr. Caldwell, My family lives Ohio and we are concerned about the damage that could be done to Lake Erie if a meltdown at Davis-Besse would occur. The top priority if the NRC should be public safety and nothing else. We would like to see the Davis-Besse nuclear reactor closed permanently. My contact information is Michael Am
-u zts OH 44054 and I would greatly appreciate an immediate response.
