October 23, 2003 Mr. James E. Maddox Tennessee Valley Authority Vice President Engineering and Technical Services Lookout Place - 6A 1101 Market Street Chattanooga, TN 37402

Dear Mr. Maddox:

The purpose of this letter is to thank you for all of the efforts that the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) provided during the recent Browns Ferry Exercise on September 24, 2003. We are aware that when the NRC participates in an exercise that there are extra efforts required for planning and coordination. In addition to these extra efforts for this exercise, the NRC needed assistance with Dr. Christine Bradshaw and Dr. Barbara Braun from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC representatives were interested in observing the exercise: touring your emergency operations facility and offsite medical facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee; the Browns Ferry emergency response facilities at the site; and the TVA and State facilities in Decatur, Alabama.

The TVA corporate emergency planning staff was most helpful in explaining and providing a tour of your Central Emergency Control Center (CECC). Mr. Al Salatka did an outstanding job arranging, escorting and explaining the Erlanger Medical Facility. At the site, we appreciated all of the efforts of Mr. Jim Wallace. During the weeks prior to the exercise, Jim worked with the NRC to make sure all of the badging and escort arrangements were all completed properly. On the day of the exercise, he explained and escorted the representatives to the control room, simulator, Technical Support Center (TSC), Operations Support Center(OSC), Joint Information Center(JIC) and the State of Alabama Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

We realize that all of these efforts required individuals to take time away from their normal responsibilities and some individuals had to take time away from their exercise responsibilities.

However, we have received many positive comments from Dr. Bradshaw and Dr. Braun and they wanted us to express their appreciation to you. They also asked us to inform you that what they learned is greatly benefitting their work and they continue to tell their colleagues about their informative and enjoyable trip.

Thank you again for all of your efforts.

Sincerely,
