SUMMARY
OF JULY 25, 2003, MEETING TO DISCUSS PROPOSAL FOR ELIMINATING RELIANCE ON KAOWOOL FOR THE SERVICE WATER INTAKE STRUCTURE On July 25, 2003, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) met with Southern Nuclear Company (SNC or the licensee) to discuss SNCs plans to address the Kaowool issues for the service water intake structure at the Farley plant and to receive NRC staff feedback on SNCs proposed approach. The licensee presented background information on the overall Kaowool issues at the Farley plant and addressed the proposed approach for eliminating the Kaowool issue for the service water intake structure.
Specifically, the licensee plans to implement modifications that will require submission of a new exemption. The licensees basis for the new exemption would include deterministic and risk-informed performance-based approaches. The staff did not voice objections with the licensees proposed overall plan for addressing the Kaowool issue at the Farley plant (service water intake structure), but requested that SNC should ensure that their application for the new exemption contain a robust risk analysis. is a list of the attendees.
