July 31, 2003 MEMORANDUM TO: Paul E. Bird, Director Office of Human Resources Luis A. Reyes Regional Administrator Region II FROM: Thomas P. Gwynn - Dwight D. Chamberlain for 7/30/03 Acting Regional Administrator
SUBJECT:
MEMORANDUM OF APPRECIATION AND RECOMMENDATION On July 8-9, 2003, four Region IV summer students joined with summer students from the other regions and attended a version of the Reactor Concepts Course. On July 10, 2003, the students toured the Bellefonte facility with Region II staff.
We greatly appreciate the time and effort of your training staff in supporting the development of our summer students. Also, we want to thank Mr. Harold O. Christensen for coordinating the tour. The tour of the Bellefonte facility in its present construction status was a valuable learning experience. The course and the tour were well received by our students.
Given our expectation that we will continue to employ students during the summer months, having training of this nature available at the beginning of next years summer hire season would be extremely valuable. A two or three-day session of formal training excerpts from existing formal training classes (such as reactor concepts, power plant engineering, simulator demonstrations, and site access training), and tailored to the needs of our summer hires is recommended as a continuing need. I believe such an investment in potential future NRC staff would be worthwhile. Questions concerning this recommendation should be directed to Dr.
Dale A. Powers of my staff at (817) 860-8195.
