June 17, 2003 Honorable Nils J. Diaz Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Chairman Diaz,
The Indian Point Nuclear Plant looms as one of the largest threats to our safety, environment and economy that this region has ever seen. Despite the plant's dimial safety record that spauis decades, warnings from the President and the FBI confirming that U.S. nuclear plants are Al Qaeda terrorist targets, and plant security officers continuing to speak out about lapses and lax defense measures, you have yet to call for Indian Point's closure.
Indian Point is a unique case because it is located in the most densely populated area in the country (just 22 miles from New York City) where 21 million people live and work within 50-mile radius of the, it lacks a workable evacuation plan in the case of a significant radiological release, and it poses a direct threat to the nation's largest metropolitan economy where a large release from the plant could cause damages in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
The Governor Pataki-commissioned report from James Lee Witt concluded the evacuation plan does not work and probablycouldrnever be made to-pfotectithoseofuswholIjviin the, aHowiieiv Point.
