WEEKLY BRANCH CHIEF REPORT BRANCH: 3 SIGNATURE: S. Ninh WEEK ENDING: 0111/02 SIGNIFICANT PLANT ISSUES/EVENTS Crystal River - A 50.72 offsite notification was submitted this week involving rescued sea turtles (EN 38602).

Scott Stewart, SRI at Crystal River was invited by Ms. Ruth Anderson to speak to the Sugarmill Woods Democratic Club this Saturday. She was former NRC employee and is presently President of the Club. This is an open public meeting.

The purpose of the meeting is for the Citrus County residents to express concerns and questions to officials from NRC, Florida Power, and the county about the safety of the nuclear plant. Region II State Liaison Officer will also attend this panel discussion. There has been a lots of press coverage in both the citrus Chronicle and the St. Petersburg Times (See Attached).

St. Lucie -

A 50.72 offsite notification was submitted this week involving a recovered sea turtle from Unit 1 intake structure (EN 38513).

U. S. Senator Bob Graham visited the St. Lucie Nuclear Plant on January 7, 2002. Senator traded in his suit and tie for a gray uniform and brown boots as he spent his workday as a security officer at the plant. His visit went very well.

He was impressed by level of training exhibited by nuclear plant security officers and the coordination between plant and county officials. At a news conference outside the plant, Senator stated that there is no need for security forces at the nation's nuclear plants to be federalized.

Turkey Point - n/a SIGNIFICANT INSPECTION FINDINGS/BRANCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS A conference call with NRR management was conducted on 01/07/02, to discuss NRR's feedback on Region II questions concerning about the St. Lucie Halon SDP phase 3 results. NRR has agreed to provide Region II with a supplemental SDP phase 3 results prior to the SERP.

A briefing package for Commissioner Diaz's visit to Crystal River was e-mailed to EDO Regional Coordinator and NRR PM this week.

Worked on resident integrated inspection reports.

Worked on allegations.

STAFFING ASSIGNMENTS/AVAILABILITY S.. Ninh is acting Branch Chief through January 28 2002.
