SUMMARY

Two 18" Ultrasonic Flowmeters, Serial Numbers WMP #2 and WMP #3, were calibrated at the ALDEN RESEARCH LABORATORY of Worcester Polytechnic Institute for WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION under their Purchase Order Number 87GC-WJ-47042.

Both 18" ultrasonic flowmeters were calibrated using straight pipe configurations. The details of the piping immediately upstream and downstream of the ultrasonic meters are shown on the piping diagram.

The results are presented in the form of a tabulated data sheet as well as a plot of the average temperature and pressure corrected mean meter factor (T,P) versus the average flow rate (q) in cubic feet per second or pounds per hour.

The flow meters were calibrated at seven flow rates ranging from 5 to-35 cubic feet per .second, or 1 to 7.7 million pounds per hour.

Tests 1 and 4 in May, 1979 identified a scaling error of approximately 0.45% which was corrected for Tests 5 and 6 conducted in June, 1979.

The error was determined to be due to incorrect placement of the paths in the LEFM meter section.

APPARATUS 100,000-POUND WEIGHING TANK FACILITY 36" TEST LINES The flow element was installed in a test line on the main floor of Laboratory Building No. 1 as shown on the Laboratory sketch.

Water for the tests was pumped from a 180,000-gallon capacity sump by means of one (or two) 300-horsepower centrifugal pump(s) arranged to operate in parallel.

The piping arrangement immediately upstream and downstream of the element to be tested is shown on the piping diagram. Careful attention was paid in aligning the flow element in the pipe. Vents were provided at various intervals in the pipe to purge the system of air.

The flow rates were obtained by means of a weigh tank mounted on Toledo scales with a capacity of 100,000 pounds, BLH Load Cell Back-up, a Hewlett-Packard "5300A" measuring system crystal reference timer using a 5301A 10 MHZ Frequency Counter Module, A Toledo Systems Crystal Reference Timer as a back-up timer, and a mercury thermometer.

PROCEDURE After the LEFM had been installed in the test line, water was pumped into the system and all air was purged from the lines. The control valve at the downstream end of the test line was set to give the desired flow rate with the discharge being diverted to the sump.

When steady state conditions were reached, the discharge valve on the weighing tank was closed and the scale indicator and the electronic timer were both zeroed. The water was then diverted to the weighing tank and the electronic timer and the Westinghouse readout on the Indian Point LEFM were actuated at the instant of diversion.

At the end of the run the water was diverted to the sump and the electronic timer and the LEFM readout were stopped, terminating the test run. The accumulated weight in the tank, the time, the water temperature, and the readout data were recorded.

The flow was then adjusted to the next desired flow rate and the procedure repeated.

Testing on the 18" pipe section and LEFM was done at seven flow rates of 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, and 5 cubic feet per second. In order to accumulate enough data from the LEFM, at least six weigh tank readings were done at 35 cfs, five at 30 cfs, four at 25 cfs, three at 20 cfs, three at 15 cfs, two at 10 cfs, and one at 5 cfs. This combined testing procedure was called a series of seven flows in this report.

The following table summarizes the number of tests that were conducted on the 18" pipe sections and Indian Point LEFM.

RESULTS The tabulated data and result sheets indicate the experimental testing information for the individual test points and the plot of temperature and pressure corrected mean meter factor (T,P) versus average flow rate show the trend of the coefficient over the flow range tested.

Since the flows were measured to the nearest ten pounds and the time to the nearest 0.001 second, the average flow rate for each run should be within +/-0.25% of the true value.

The Laboratory's standards for the measurement of temperature, time, weight and length are traceable to the National Bureau of Standards.

SUMMARY

Two 18" Ultrasonic Flowmeters, Serial Numbers WMP #2 and WMP #3, were calibrated at the ALDEN RESEARCH LABORATORY of Worcester Polytechnic Institute for WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION under their Purchase Order Number 87GC-WJ-47042.

Both 18" ultrasonic flowmeters were calibrated using straight pipe configurations. The details of the piping immediately upstream and downstream of the ultrasonic meters are shown on the piping diagram.

The results are presented in the form of a tabulated data sheet as well as a plot of the average temperature and pressure corrected mean meter factor (T,P) versus the average flow rate (q) in cubic feet per second or pounds per hour.

The flow meters were calibrated at seven flow rates ranging from 5 to 35 cubic feet per second, or 1 to 7.7 million pounds per hour.

Tests 1 and 4 in May, 1979 identified a scaling error of approximately 0.45% which was corrected for Tests 5 and 6 conducted in June, 1979.

The error was determined to be due to incorrect placement of the paths in the LEFM meter section.
