SUMMARY

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

DIRECT AND MANAGE PROJECTS RELATED TO RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL AND SOLID RADIOACTIVE WASTE POLICY, STANDARDS, AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO NUCLEAR SITES TO ESTABLISH CORPORATE REQUIREMENTS AND GUIDANCE, ASSIST IN PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION, AND IMPLEMENT SOLUTIONS TO RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL PROGRAM DEFICIENCIES. MAJOR EMPHASIS TO BE PLACED ON PROGRAMMATIC ISSUES/ACTIVITIES, LONG-RANGE PROBLEMS, AND NEW INDUSTRY INITIATIVES. ACT AS CORPORATE HEALTH PHYSICIST FOR ALL TVAN RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL PROGRAMS.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

THE MANAGER SHOULD HAVE AN ADVANCED DEGREE OR THE EQUIVALENT IN A SCIENCE OR ENGINEERING SUBJECT, INCLUDING FORMAL TRAINING IN RADIATION PROTECTION.

SHALL HAVE AT LEAST 10 YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE IN APPLIED RADIATION PROTECTION. CERTIFICATION AS A CERTIFIED HEALTH PHYSICIST IS PREFERRED.

POSITION PURPOSE:

Performs the function of Corporate Health Physicist by setting the technical standards and direction for radiological protection and low-level radioactive waste. Responsible for providing senior management with expertise and direction in matters related to radiological protection and low-level radioactive waste control.

Maintains a staff of experts in radiological control and low-Level radioactive waste to direct and manage projects related to radiological control and sdlid radioactive waste policy, standards, and technical support to nuclear sites to establish corporate requirements and guidance, assist in program implementation, and implement solutions to radiological control program deficiencies. Major emphasis to be placed on programmatic issues/activities, generic and long-range problems, and new industry technologies and initiatives.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Perform the function of Corporate Health Physicist for all TVAN radiological control programs.
2. Represent TVA as the technical expert in radiological control and Low-level radioactive waste matters.
3. Communicates and advises senior management on radiological control and low-level radioactive waste matters and provides the direction for high standards in radiation protection and radwaste control.
4. Provide support and technical direction to the nuclear sites through the Plant Manager, RadCon/Chemistry Managers and RadCon Managers.
5. Conduct centralized dose-of-record external dosimetry (TLD processing) for all TVA NRC Licenses (approximately 35 locations).
6. Manage and direct major projects for the sites that involve technical direction and are both generic and long term (i.e., 10 CFR 20 implementation, dose-of-record program).
7. Direct the Radiological Control staff to ensure that radiation protection and radioactive waste requirements and technical support are defined and provided to TVAN sites for implementation and to be within regulatory requirements, industry standard practice and minimize litigation against TVA.
8. Manage activities of the Specialists to ensure that personnel dosimetry (external and internal dosimetry),

solid radioactive waste and radioactive material shipping programs are defined and implemented and that radiation protection policy is defined to conduct site operations. Responsible for technical support and project management activities provided to support continued TVAN site operations.

9. Manage activities of the Exposure Information Unit to maintain TVAN's radiation exposure data base to ensure that accurate and sufficient information regarding radiation exposure is maintained indefinitely and retrievable for required routine and special reports.

Establish radiation protection performance goals, consistent with As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA),

to reduce radiation injury risks to TVAN workers and the public.

11. Ensure implementation of radiation protection and radioactive waste requirements and report results to senior TVAN management so that cognizance of program performance is maintained.
12. Serve as Radiological Assessment Manager and Assistant CECC Director in the Chattanooga Emergency Control Center and direct radiological assessment and CECC activities associated with emergencies or drills.
13. Manage the regulatory and licensing review of radiation protection issues by preparing and approving input pertaining to radiation protection for Safety Analysis Reports or other licensing submittals to ensure response consistency and completeness.
14. Ensure the implementation of Radiological Control training programs to *ensure they are sufficient to prepare employees for safe work in TVAN facilities.
15. Provide a staff of personnel proficient in radiation protection and dose and environs assessment to support Emergency Plan requirements.
16. Evaluate new industry initiatives as to their value add to TVAN's sites by keeping abreast of new initiatives, assessing the worth and recommending actions to the sites.
17. Determine those short-term radiation control problems that are generic to the sites and develop solutions in a timely manner.
18. Develop a consistent methodology for standardization of radiation control organizations and methodology for all TVAN plants.
19. Responsible for the activities and functions of the senior ALARA committee.
20. Act for the Radiological and Chemistry Control Manager as requested, in the manager's absence.

'IMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

_ manager should have an advanced degree or the equivalent in a science or engineering subject (preferably in radiation protection), including 15 or more years formal experience in radiation protection. The manager shall have at least 10 years of professional experience in applied power plant radiation protection and low-level radioactive waste control. Certification as a certified health physicist is preferred.
