Dear Ms. Boranian:
I am responding to your letter of January 23, 2003, to Chairman Meserve in which you invited the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to participate in a Community Board 11 meeting to discuss the Indian Point nuclear power facility. Due to the current press of business, I will not be able to attend the meeting.
On February 25, 2003, I testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management regarding emergency preparedness at the Indian Point Energy Center. The purpose of my testimony was to discuss NRCs role in emergency preparedness at nuclear facilities and the status of NRC oversight of Indian Point. Enclosed is my summary statement from that hearing.
I want to assure you that we are continuing close oversight and inspection of operations, emergency planning and security programs at the Indian Point facility. We will also closely monitor steps taken over the coming months by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, State, counties, and other local jurisdictions to address offsite emergency preparedness issues.
