Dear Mr. Coutu:

This acknowledges receipt of your letter dated January 2, 2003, in response to our letter dated December 2, 2003, transmitting a Notice of Violation associated with a White finding involving the lack of a fixed fire suppression system for fire area TU-95B. We have reviewed the corrective actions described in your letter. The corrective actions described appear to be adequate and we have no further questions at this time.

To review the adequacy of your corrective actions in greater depth, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Region III staff will conduct a supplemental inspection at the Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant, March 3 through 7, 2003. The inspection will be conducted by a reactor engineer from the NRC Region III Office. The inspection will be conducted in accordance with IP 95001, the NRCs supplemental inspection procedure for one or two White findings in a strategic performance area.

We request that during the on-site inspection week you ensure that all applicable information regarding this finding be readily accessible. Your cooperation and support during this inspection will be appreciated. If you have questions concerning this inspection, please contact the inspector conducting this inspection, Mr. Robert C. Daley, at (630) 829-9749 or myself at (630) 829-9751.

Coutu In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRCs "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter will be available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the Publicly Available Records (PARS) component of NRCs document system (ADAMS).
