RE: Spill of hydraulic oil - Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Oil Operations Permit Number 2002-OPT-2092 On November 22, 2002 an O-ring failed on a hydraulic line union on a forklift that caused a release of oil, which resulted in no more than 5 gallons of hydraulic fluid leaking onto the roadway and ground at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant site in Lusby, MD (Calvert County). The forklift traveled approximately 600 feet on an asphalt road and 20 feet on blue stone surface before the leak was noticed. The oil spill was discovered at 10:40 AM when an employee noticed a small trail of oil trailing behind the forklift. As soon as the leak was noticed the forklift was stopped and a spill response was initiated.
Personnel responded and absorbent was used to absorb all of the oil on the asphalt roadway.
The absorbent and the contaminated soil was placed in two 55-gallon drums and the drums are ready to be properly disposed.
It is estimated that no more than 5 gallons of hydraulic oil was spilled to the ground and asphalt roadway. No oil entered the storm drains or the Chesapeake Bay.
Daily visual inspections are completed each day with a check off sheet to ensure a complete check on the forklifts. The visual inspection that morning was performed without any findings.
The impact of the discharge on public health and the waters of the state was negligible. The cost of the spill to Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Inc. is estimated at $2000.
The above information was reported to the National Response Center (Report # 007503) and MDE by telephone on November 22, 2002.
The O-ring on the forklift was replaced and the system checks were successfully completed.
The equipment has been retumed to service.
