Withdrawal of 10CFR50.55a Requests for Alternatives for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station (RR-A20, RR-A21, RR-A22, RR-A23, RR-A24, and RR-A25)
Ladies and Gentlemen:
The purpose of this letter is to withdraw from the NRC 10CFR50.55a requests RR-A20, RR-A21, RR-A22, RR-A23, RR-A24, and RR-A25, submitted by the FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, Unit Number 1 (DBNPS). These requests were related to plans to repair the original reactor pressure vessel head and associated control rod drive mechanism nozzles. Related FENOC correspondence included letters dated January 11, 2002 (Serial Number 2750) and February 26, 2002 (Serial Number 2765), and three letters dated April 25, 2002 (Serial Numbers 2777, 2783, and 2785).
On May 23, 2002, FENOC notified the NRC Staff that it had purchased the unused Midland Nuclear Plant reactor pressure vessel head, and that the replacement of the head, rather than repair of the original head, was the preferred option for returning the DBNPS to service.
Accordingly, by letters dated June 14, 2002 (Serial Numbers 2793 and 2794), FENOC requested the NRC to suspend review of the subject 10CFR50.55a requests. Based on progress with efforts to replace the head, FENOC is confident that a resumption in the processing of the subject 10CFR50.55a requests will not be required, and hereby requests their withdrawal.
