One peripheral question. Why is Lew Myers involved in this issue given that he is the Site VP at Beaver Valley? Has he been moved over to DB?

The repair was submitted formally late last Friday. Please see the following text from an email from B.

Sheron...

Bob Saunders just called me to make sure that NRC was aware that FENOC is actively pursuing the Midland head replacement alternative, and that is now their preferred alternative. (This is consistent with what Lew Myers was telling Wednesday.)

The Davis Besse head repair plan was received today, and Bob said he wants us to start reviewing it. He said that a decision on the replacement head is still several weeks away, and doesn't want to lose time on the repair option should they have to exercise it. He looks at it merely as a review fee he will be charged for.

From a schedule standpoint, he said that if they go the repair route, he thinks the repair could be completed and the head reinstalled by the early part of August. If they go the Midland head replacement route, he said that September is their best guess for completion.

He said that Frametome is still looking for Inconel 690 tubing, and if they can locate the necessary amount, they will replace the existing CRDM guide tubes in the Midland head.

he mentioned some differences between the Midland and DB upper support structures that need to be dealt with (this is the structure above the vessel head that surrounds the CRDMs). he said there was also a concern with the CRDM and other instrumentation cabling if they went with a replacement head. This cabling would have to be moved and/or rerouted, and the concern is the brittleness of the existing cabling due to its expose to heat and radiation and whether moving would damage it.

More to come I presume .........

Ho, When is the repair going to be submitted officially?
