Dear Mr. Suber:

The V.C. Summer Nuclear Station - owned and operated by South Carolina Electric &

Gas Co. and co-owned with the South Carolina Public Service Authority -- has a proven track record as one of the safest, most reliable nuclear facilities in the nation.

By this letter I would like to express my support for Summer Station's application to renew its operating license for an additional 20 years.

The NRC is already involved in license renewal cases'with a number of other utilities that have older nuclear facilities. Even though the license expiration date for Summer Station is still more than 20 years away, I believe they are acting in a prudent manner by making application now so that the license renewal process can proceed in a timely fashion.

Summer Station has been an integral part of Fairfield County since the early 1970s, and SCE&G's history in the area there dates back nearly a century. They have a demonstrated record of being a good corporate neighbor through their partnerships with the people of Fairfield County and the neighboring counties of Lexington, Newberry and Richland.

-Summer Station's operations provide jobs.for-nearly-a thousand people. And.SC(ANA-..

owned companies pay more than $17.5 million in tax~s to Fairfield County, money that helps support vital public services and provides for a better quality of life.

Based on the facts, I believe extending the operating life of Summer Station will provide a continuing safe, reliable energy source for the people of South Carolina.
