SUMMARY
OF OCTOBER 22, 2002, MEETING TO DISCUSS ONGOING ACTIVITIES RELATED TO REACTOR PHYSICS AND REACTOR CORE MANAGEMENT On October 22, 2002, members of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff met with representatives of the Nuclear Management Company, LLC (the licensee), to discuss ongoing activities related to reactor physics and reactor core management for the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2. This meeting was a Category 2 meeting. The public was invited to participate at designated points identified on the agenda.
A public meeting notice for the meeting was issued on October 11, 2002, and a copy of the meeting notice was posted on the NRCs external (public) web page (ADAMS Accession No. ML022840083). The agenda was included in the meeting notice.
The meeting was requested by the licensee to (1) inform the NRC staff of the licensees plans and schedules to transfer non-loss-of-coolant accident safety analysis scope to Westinghouse-approved methods for Prairie Island, and (2) obtain feedback from the NRC staff. Enclosure 2 provides the licensees presentation handout.
The licensee discussed its plan to provide a submittal to the NRC staff in February 2003 since a license amendment would be required to make the technical specifications consistent with transferring to Westinghouse-approved methodologies. The licensee stated that it plans to implement the Westinghouse-approved methodologies in September 2003.
The NRC staff stressed the importance of ensuring applicability of each Westinghouse code and methodology to Prairie Island, including any restrictions in the application of the code and methodology.
