November 12, 2002 Chairman Richard A. Meserve U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Coninission Mail Stop 016C1 Washington, DC 20555-0001
Dear Chairman Meserve:
In the November 10, 2002 edition of The Journal News, an article written by Roger Witherspoon, "Nuclear Danger Zone, A Meltdown at a Plnt's Spent Fuel Pool Could Sicken Thousands Within 500 miles, a Federal Study Has Warned," suggests that a study was completed in 2000 that points directly to the major safety issues relating to the spent fuel rod pools.
My immediate response to the article is what I have previously called for - that the NRC mandate a stronger and more robust building for the spent fuel rod pools at Indian Point.
You have indicated that the NRC is reviewing safety issues with the spent fuel pools. If indeed the NRC completed a study in Octobcr 2000 that produced information that there is vulnerability with respect to the spent fuel rods, it is essential that the NRC require an immediate change in regulations so that a more secure facility is developcd for the spent fuel rods.
I need not remind you that these are the nuclear plants located in the most densely populated area of the country.
I look forward to a positive response to my request.
Sincerely, Sandra R. Galef CC: Michael Kansler, Sr. V.P., Entergy Nuclear Northeast ALBANY OFr-CE. Room 5*AG0 Legislative Of4ce Suilding. Albany, New York 12M48. (Sle) 455-53.48, FAX (SI18) 455-5728 DISTRICT OFFICE 2 Church Stret, Os*inIng, New York< 10562. (S14) 941-111 1. FAX (914) 541.9132 c
