SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE FOR SEPTEMBER 2002 A. UNIT 2 MONTHLY OPERATING EXPERIENCE

SUMMARY

On September 1, 2002, Unit 2 power was reduced to perform maintenance on Feedwater and Condensate pumps, and also to perform SCRAM Timing of Control Rod Drives. During the planned down power, load was reduced to approximately 490 MWe. Following the completion of the activities the plant was returned to full power on September 3, 2002. With the exception of short periods for routine maintenance and surveillances, Unit 2 operated at full power throughout the remainder of the period.

B. UNIT 3 MONTHLY OPERATING EXPERIENCE

SUMMARY

Unit 3 is operating at the end of its seventeenth operating cycle. Unit 3 operated throughout the month at reduced power due to its end of cycle coast down. Unit 3 is scheduled to begin the refueling outage on October 08, 2002.

On September 7, 2002, power was reduced to approximately 675 MWe to facilitate removal of the high-pressure feedwater heaters to increase the unit's output during the coast down. Following the removal of the heaters, an increased turbine thrust bearing temperature was observed. It was believed that an extraction steam imbalance in the turbine resulted in higher thrust bearing temperatures. Additionally, the 'C' low-pressure heaters were removed from service on September 13, 2002. On September 26, extraction steam was restored to one of the D heaters to balance the turbine load and reduce turbine thrust bearing temperature. For the remainder of the reporting period, Unit 3 operated at the maximum attainable power except for short periods for routine maintenance, and surveillances.
