PSEG Nuclear LLC P 0 Box 236, Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038-0236 OCT 1 0 Z0OZ LRN-02-0346 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 SALEM GENERATING STATIONS - UNIT I FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE DPR-70 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 REQUEST FOR WITHDRAWAL OF RELIEF REQUEST S1-RR-A05 0 PSEG Nuclear LLC By letter dated July 8, 2002, PSEG Nuclear LLC (PSEG) submitted relief request S1 RR-A05 to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for relief from requirements of paragraph IWA-221 0 of Section XI of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code under the provisions of 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(i). Paragraph IWA-2210 requires, in part, that illumination levels from battery-powered portable lights shall be checked before and after each examination or series of examinations, not to exceed 4 hours4.62963e-5 days <br />0.00111 hours <br />6.613757e-6 weeks <br />1.522e-6 months <br /> between checks.

The proposed relief request alternative for acceptable illumination levels is based on determination by the certified visual examiner. Subsequent discussions with NRC staff on September 12, 2002 have resulted in our determination that relief as requested is not viable at this time. Therefore, this letter requests the withdrawal of Relief Request S1 RR-A05.
