Plutonium

Dear Mr. Lesar,

I am outraged and really SCARED about the plutonium shipments into the Savannah River Nuclear Site. As a citizen of Savannah, I realize the potential threat this is to our community as well as Charlotte and Augusta.

My first concern is the threat this poses to our environment. Georgia has rj been the most aggressive state on the Eastern coast in terms of saving the (D

wetlands/marshes. These areas are vitally important to the entire eastern W

fl*

coast and world in terms of marine life in our oceans. The damage this a- ).

nuclear site is already imposing on the area is inconceiveable to me. The site is already overflowing with waste that the DOE has proven time and time

__ ci again they CANNOT CONTROL. How could our government possibly allow them to 0 0

increase the amount of waste going into this unstable site that is already 0

1 polluting our region and world environment. This coastal area is a national treasure to all of America and these nuclear wastes are detroying U) it!

My second major concern is in regard to a national security threat. An accident at this site would destroy all the neighboring communities.

Savannah is a beautiful and growing city. Charlotte and Augusta are the same. I don't think many people realize the immense threat of this plutonium poses to our area. It is not well publicized...almost as if it is a cover-up.

I personnally work with over 200 dialysis patients who watch TV normally for 3-4 hours 3 times a week (often this is the news). Most of them had never heard about this threat. I can assure you they are upset and concerned for our community.

I would like a response to a few questions:

What can be done instead of building this expensive facility?

What is SRS doing right now about the waste they are already spilling over (or under as they say) the Savannah river?

What happens if there is an accident at the facility or terrorist attack at this site? If the area is devastated by these nuclear wastes (which it is already happening), what will happen to the homeowners? Will the government reimburse us for the property losses?

I sincerely hope that you will hear the crys of the community and stop the further plutonium polution to this region. We are already suffering a huge burden of radioactive waste produced in this country...especially for an area where so many people live.

Sincerely, Adrienne Valentino 3 Crows Nest Point Savannah, GA 31419
