Dear Mr. Gurdziel:
I am writing in response to your letters of August 11, August 14, August 18, September 7, and September 13, 2002, to Mr. John Grobe of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC),
regarding the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station. In your letters, you expressed concerns about the damage to the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) head and other areas of the reactor vessel itself, as well as the management style and operating organization of the plant.
We wish to thank you for your information and to let you know the NRC is taking significant regulatory action prompted by the discovery of RPV head degradation at Davis-Besse, and we will be evaluating the information you sent us and taking appropriate action.
The NRC takes its responsibility for protecting the public health and safety seriously. We continue to vigilantly monitor and regulate Davis-Besse as well as all other nuclear power reactors to ensure they operate in a manner that adequately protects public health and safety and the environment. The Davis-Besse plant will not restart until the NRC is satisfied that all current safety concerns have been resolved.
