Dear Ms. Carlina:
I am responding to your letter of July 24, 2002, inviting an NRC representative to the Public Safety meeting on September 9, 2002. As I discussed with you earlier this month, due to the current press of business, the NRC will not be able to attend this meeting. We have scheduled a meeting next week with Entergy, near the location of the plant, to discuss current plant performance. This meeting will be open to the public, and the NRC will remain to answer questions from members of the public and other stakeholders.
In your letter you requested input on why the Indian Point plant should not be closed. I had previously faxed you a copy of a May 6, 2002, letter to Mr. Altman, Legislative Counsel, City of New York, that included NRCs response to a similar question. Additionally, I have attached two recent letters which are directly relevant: 1) a July 24, 2002 letter to Ms. Donna De Costanzo, City of New York; and, 2) an August 28, 2002 letter from Mr. Huber Miller, NRC to Mr. Michael Kansler, Entergy. In the latter letter you will find NRCs assessment that Indian Point 2 has operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety and that substantial progress has been made at the station.
I regret that I am not able to make your meeting; however, you may enter these letters into the record. Additionally, I am available to further discuss the safety of the Indian Point plants. I have also attached the meeting notice for NRCs September 4, 2002 meeting, which will be held in the vicinity of the plant. Please contact me at 610-337-5080 should you have any further questions.
