Subject:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING EXCLUSION OF FRENCH DATA FROM THE STEAM GENERATOR DEGRADATION SPECIFIC MANAGEMENT DATABASE

Dear Mr. Marion:

By letter dated July 25, 2002, NEI responded to the NRC staffs questions on excluding the French data from the outside diameter stress corrosion cracking (ODSCC) database.

The NRC staff reviewed NEIs responses and determined that additional analyses are needed to support NEIs proposal to exclude the French data from the database. In particular, analyses demonstrating there is a statistical difference between the French and domestic data are needed. These analyses should include all of the data including the data from the steam generator tubes removed from Beaver Valley Unit 1 and Sequoyah Unit 2. In addition to the above analyses, a discussion on the need to perform periodic confirmatory analyses (including statistical) to confirm that the U.S. data are different than the French data is needed. Such analyses could be provided when the database is updated and would confirm that the two groups of data continue to remain different.

If you have any questions, please contact Louise Lund (301-415-3248) or John Tsao (301-415-2702) of my staff.

Sincerely, William H. Bateman, Chief /RA/
