AEP:NRC:2382-01, dated April 25, 2002 This letter provides a written follow-up to an April 26, 2002, conversation between I&M and NRC personnel concerning the Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant Unit 2 Train AB station battery.

Between April 3, 2002, and April 23, 2002, I&M replaced five Unit 2 Train AB battery cells whose cell covers were found cracked. I&M determined that the cracking was common to battery cells in a lot purchased from C&D Technologies, Inc. (C&D) in 1994. The battery cells were subsequently installed in the Unit 2 Train AB battery system.

U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission AEP:NRC:2382-02 Page 2 In Reference 1, the NRC approved I&M's emergency Technical Specification amendment request (Reference 2) that revised Surveillance Requirement 4.8.2.3.2.c.1 for the Unit 2 Train AB and CD batteries only. The change allows batteries exhibiting physical damage or abnormal deterioration to be evaluated to determine if the damage or deterioration impacts battery performance.

Since battery cells from the lot purchased in 1994 remain in the Unit 2 Train AB battery system, additional cell covers may crack in the future. As such, I&M is committing to replacing and/or repairing those battery cells exhibiting cover cracking during the next Unit 2 outage of convenience, when sufficient time and the appropriate parts are available. Battery cell repairs will be performed in accordance with C&D approved methods.
