CLOSEOUT OF FIRE PROTECTION PROGRAM PLAN CHANGES FOR CALLAWAY PLANT (TAC NO. MB2919)
By letter dated September 5, 2001, the licensee submitted a request for the NRC staff to approve changes to the fire protection program for Callaway Plant, Unit 1. The requested changes involved the design configuration of Fire Areas A-1, A-18, and A-27. The licensee provided supplemental information in its letter of December 13, 2001. This request was related to NRC Inspection Report 50-483/00-13 dated October 30, 2000.
By letter dated May 13, 2002, the licensee withdrew its request for the NRC staff to approve the fire protection program changes. In the letter, the licensee stated that it had decided to withdraw its application for economic reasons and planned to pursue a plant modification. As described in the attached e-mail, the licensee will be installing a 1-hour fire wrap on one of the redundant circuits in each of the above fire areas. The licensee stated that this fire wrap will bring the plant in accordance with commitments made in Section III.G, "Fire Protection of Safe Shutdown Capability," of Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) Appendix 9.5E, which provides the plant design comparison to 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix R, "Fire Protection Program for Nuclear Power Facilities Operating Prior to January 1, 1979."

RE: Fire Protection Program Plan Changes Closeout Letter We have decided to install a 1-hour fire wrap. This fire wrap will be placed on one of the redundant circuits in each fire area thereby bringing Callaway Plant in accordance with commitments made in FSAR Appendix 9.5E, to Section III.G., Design Comparison to 10CFR50, Appendix R. Completion of the modifications will close out the finding by placing the plant in compliance with our licensing commitments. Since the corrective action for this finding does not require NRC approval, we will track the finding to closure using our corrective action program. We will be maintaining compensatory measures (hourly fire watches) until the modifications are completed.
