May 9, 2002 Alice Williams, Project Director U.S. Department of Energy West Valley Demonstration Project 10282 Rock Springs Road West Valley, NY 14171-9799

Dear Ms. Williams:

I am writing to thank you for your participation at the recent West Valley Demonstration Project meetings in Ashford Hollow, New York. I appreciate your help in making these meetings productive. The exchange of information among various stakeholders was, and will continue to be, an important part of the West Valley site decommissioning process. I was particularly pleased with the cooperation displayed by regulators, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority in our April 17th public meetings.

I am looking forward to working with you and your staff in the future to ensure successful decommissioning of the site. The transcript and the meeting summaries will be available on the NRC public website in the near future.

Sincerely,

/RA/
