SUMMARY
OF THE MARCH 28, 2002, MEETING WITH THE PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAR POWER PLANT TO DISCUSS PERFORMANCE On March 28, 2002, a public meeting was held at the Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant staff. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss NRCs assessment of Prairie Islands performance for the period of April 1, 2001, through December 31, 2001. In addition, Prairie Island officials briefly discussed their own assessment of performance.
During the NRC presentation, an overall assessment of Prairie Islands performance was provided. As explained in the Annual Assessment letter from NRC to Prairie Island, dated March 4, 2002, reference ADAMS accession number ML020700420, performance at Prairie Island was within the Regulatory Response Column and, with the exception of a follow up supplemental inspection for a White finding from the previous assessment period, only baseline inspections are planned for Prairie Island through March 31, 2003. Following this meeting, members of the public and the media questioned the NRC staff on a variety of issues. These issues included the licensees actions post September 11 and how the NRCs highest level of security compared with the five levels of security issued by the Office of Homeland Security.
