SUMMARY

OF THE APRIL 9, 2002, MEETING WITH THE POINT BEACH NUCLEAR POWER PLANT TO DISCUSS PERFORMANCE On April 9, 2002, a public meeting was held at the Point Beach Nuclear Power Plant between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Point Beach Nuclear Power Plant staff.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss NRCs assessment of Point Beachs performance for the period of April 1, 2001, through December 31, 2001. In addition, Point Beach officials briefly discussed their own assessment of performance.

During the NRC presentation, an overall assessment of Point Beachs performance was provided. As explained in the Annual Assessment letter from NRC to Point Beach, dated March 4, 2002, reference ADAMS accession number ML020700411, performance at Point Beach Unit 1 was within the Regulatory Response Column and Point Beach Unit 2 was within the Licensee Response Column. Based on this, and the fact that the supplemental inspection conducted for the White Performance Indicator that caused Unit 1 to be in the Regulatory Response Column had been completed with no additional issues identified, only baseline inspections are planned for Point Beach through March 31, 2003. The slides presented that day by the NRC are available in ADAMS (accession number ML021010026).

Following this meeting, members of the public that attended had no questions for the NRC and one media representative questioned the NRC staff on the ability of nuclear power plant containments to withstand the impact of large aircraft, such as commercial passenger jets.
