THE ASSEMBLY STATE OF NEW YORK RANKING MINORITY MEMBER Mental Health

  • t ALBANY COMMITTEES Ways and Means FRED W. THIELE, JR.

Environmental Conservation Assemblyman 2nd District Local Governments March 15, 2002 Ms. Kathy Gibson, Chief Emergency Preparedness and Health Physics Section US NRC Washington, D.C. 20555

Dear Ms. Gibson,

We are writing to you in order to voice our concerns about the safety of our constituents who live on the East End on Long Island and are within close proximity to the Millstone Power Station in Waterford, Connecticut.

It has come to our attention that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be supplying Potassium Iodide (KI) to various communities in order to be prepared for radiological emergencies. It has also come to our attention that these doses will be made available only to Americans that live within a ten-mile emergency-planning zone of a nuclear power plant.

Some of our constituents who live on the eastern tip of Long Island are only twelve miles away from the Millstone nuclear power plant. Others live only fifteen miles away. While these constituents do not fall within the ten-mile radius boundary, they will be affected by radiation should an accident occur, via spill or terrorist attack, at this nuclear power plant. Safety at the Millstone nuclear plant has been a great concern of all East End residents.

Connecticut has requested 4 50,000 doses of KI in order to treat its residents living near the same nuclear plant in case of radiation poisoning resulting from an accident at the Millstone site. We are also requesting that KI be supplied to the public authorities and health facilities on the East End of Long Island. Due to their close proximity of Millstone, this precautionary measure may be the difference between life and death for our constituents if an emergency situation were to occur.

We also ask that the ten-mile emergency-planning zone be expended to a fifty-mile radius, as any nuclear threat would most certainly affect residents living this close to the Millstone nuclear power plant.
