Dear Chairman Meserve and Commissioners:
I am very concerned about the recent security breach on the lands of the Indian Point nuclear power plants. It is critical to the safety of millions of people that the grounds of Indian Point are secured.
It is of utmost importance that the general safety and security of the plant be increased and updated. This means having solid fencing around the entire perimeter of Entergy land in the Indian Point region, not only the area that contains the actual operations of the plant.
There is also the issue of plant access via the Hudson River. I know that there is a 300 yard no-watercraft zone extending from the plant into the river. However, the Coast Guard may not be present to enforce that zone on a continual basis. I would request that additional monitoring be put into place to prevent this no-watercraft zone from being breached. This could be in the form of underwater fencing, human surveillance, motion detectors or other effective methods.
It is also important that charges be pursued against the three people who were hunting turkeys on restricted land. It would create a poor precedent to allow these men to enter land in which nuclear material is in accessible range without any consequences.
I have also sent a letter expressing these concerns to Entergy. I hope to continue this dialogue in the future to increase security at the nuclear plants.
Sincerely, Sandra R.
