October 25, 2001 NOTE FOR:

SUBJECT:

MINUTES OF MEETING WITH EV PRODUCTS, II-VI INC., AND INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT (IEM), INC.

OCTOBER 24, 2001 Representatives of eV Products requested the meeting with the NRC staff to discuss the application process for the paint thickness gauge Model CPC-48 (backscatter type) having 50 mCi Cd-109. The sources are registered and manufactured by Isotope Products Corporation (Model XFB-3) and Amersham Corporation (Model CUC.D1).

Until recently, the CPC-48 was manufactured and distributed by Pettit Applied Technologies in the State of Maryland as Registry No. MD-1003-D-102-G. eV Products acquired the U.S.

manufacturing and distributing rights from Stapell/Guider Corporation (doing business as S & G Technologies). Since eV Products is located in the State of Pennsylvania, the application for the Model CPC-48 was submitted to NRC.

During the meeting, Mr. Kevin Parnham of eV Products stated that the Model CPC-48 will be utilized for the measurement of paint and other coating thickness on surfaces (cars, airplanes, piping, etc.) and demonstrated the operation of the sample gauge model.

The following issues were discussed and clarified during the meeting.

the maximum activity of Cd-109 is 50 mCi, not 50 mCi + 25% as indicated the application; the estimate of yearly potential dose of 49.1 rem to the operator cleaning the CPC-48 for monthly maintenance is based on 50 mCi. The assumption is very conservative and unlikely operational use; the NRC staff will use MicroShield Version 5.5 for the verification of 49.1 rem/hr estimation based on eV Products input data; and eV Products will submit the Airport damper Model 2SK160S reliability data as soon as the manufacturer provides them to eV Products.
