SUBJECT:

LICENSE RENEWAL DEMONSTRATION PROJECT

Dear Mr. Nelson:

We received your May 24, 2001 letter, enclosing two examples demonstrating how the Generic Aging Lessons Learned (GALL) report could be used in a license renewal application. As you mentioned in your letter, these examples are based on the August 2000, draft of GALL and License Renewal Standard Review Plan (SRP-LR). The future license renewal applications will be based on the latest version of license renewal documents available at that time. As discussed in the May 1, 2001 meeting, we will review these examples, and prepare request for additional information, safety evaluation reports, and a list of inspection verification items. This effort should provide information to address the questions in your letter and clarify the appropriate use of GALL as a reference in the renewal process. As requested, we are enclosing our schedule for the license renewal demonstration project. If you have any question regarding this matter, please contact S. K. Mitra at (301) 415-2783 or Sam Lee at (301) 415-3109.

Sincerely,

/RA/
