December 18, 2000 Mr. Anthony R. Pietrangelo Director Risk & Performance Regulation Nuclear Generation Division Nuclear Energy Institute 1776 Eye Street, N.W.

Suite 400 Washington, DC 20006-2496

Dear Mr. Pietrangelo:

This is to inform you that disposition has been made on one long-standing traveler containing proposed changes to the Standard Technical Specification (STS) NUREGs made by the NEI Technical Specification Task Force (TSTF). The staff has approved TSTF-360, Revision 1.

This approval represents the culmination of several years of technical discussions with the TSTF and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) regarding the appropriate technical specification requirements for safety-related batteries and battery chargers. We believe that the changes are a significant improvement that involve a more risk-sensitive approach to degraded battery conditions and provide additional clarity regarding battery operability. It is our intention to incorporate TSTF-360, Revision 1, into Revision 2 of the STS NUREGs.

Please contact me at (301) 415-1161 or e-mail wdb@nrc.gov if you have any questions or need further information on this disposition.

Sincerely,

/RA/
