SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MAY 4, 2000, MEETING WITH CONSUMERS ENERGY REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A BULK MATERIAL RELEASE PROGRAM On May 4, 2000, the staff met with representatives from Consumers Energy Company regarding the decommissioning of the Big Rock Point (BRP) nuclear plant. The purpose of the meeting was to inform the NRC staff of a planned license amendment submittal to describe a Bulk Material Release Program and to establish a radiation release criteria for construction-type materials. Materials meeting the release criteria would be shipped to designated industrial-waste burial sites in Michigan. Materials not meeting the release criteria would be disposed of as radioactive waste. The licensee plans to make this submittal in the June/July 2000 time frame. Two prior meetings (December 9, 1999, and January 18, 2000) were held with Consumers Energy during which the licensee briefly discussed its intent to submit the subject license amendment.
The May 4th meeting was noticed on January 7, 2000, and open to public observation. The attendance list is included as Enclosure 1. The BRP handout used at the meeting is provided as Enclosure 2.
During the course of the meeting no regulatory decisions were requested or made.
