SUMMARY
OF MAY 10, 2000, PHONE CALL BETWEEN THE U.S.
NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION (NRC) STAFF, CONTRACTOR AND NUCLEAR ENERGY INSTITUTE (NEI) REPRESENTATIVES TO DISCUSS INDUSTRY COMMENTS SUBMITTED BY NEI ON APRIL 24, 2000, ON THE DRAFT GENERIC AGING LESSONS LEARNED (GALL)
REPORT - ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT On May 10, 2000, the NRC staff had a conference call with its contractor and representatives of NEI in Rockville, Maryland. The purpose of the phone call was to clarify certain NEI comments submitted on April 24, 2000, on the draft GALL report regarding electrical equipment. The NEI participants were Doug Walters and Paul Colaianni. The staff participants were Paul Shemanski, Jit Vora, P. T. Kuo, Sam Lee, Peter Kang and S. K. Mitra. Robert Lofaro (Contractor) of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) also participated.
The staff and its contractor asked the industry to clarify the following NEI comments on the draft GALL report:
1.
The terms instrumentation and instrumentation and control cable were used indiscriminately.
2.
The term equipment or component were used interchangeably.
3.
The term aging assessment appeared to be inappropriate in the title of Chapter X.
4.
On page X A-1, the terms aging provision, detrimental in paragraph 2, and for license renewal in paragraph 3 appeared to be inappropriate.
5.
The title for reference NUREG/CR-6384 was missing.
6.
In Chapters XI A-1, XI A-2, XI A-3, Item 2, Preventive Actions and Item 5 Monitoring and Trending indicated that no actions were taken.
7.
- a. The term Non-EQ appeared to be missing from the title of Chapter XI.
- b. The scope of existing aging management program in Chapter XI A-1, A-2, A-3 did not include inaccessible cables and connections.

The reference, EPRI TR-109619, Guideline or the Management of Adverse Localized Equipment Environment, June 1999" was deleted.
NEI indicated that the industry will clarify these issues after further review.
