REQUEST FOR REVIEW OF WHITE PAPER - DEVELOPMENT OF RISK-BASED PERFORMANCE INDICATORS, PROGRAM OVERVIEW Enclosed for your review is a copy of a white paper on the development of risk-based performance indicators (RBPIs). The white paper addresses the definition of RBPIs, the benefits of RBPIs in the Revised Reactor Oversight Process, and the process of developing RBPIs. The development ofRBPIs is being undertaken as a possible enhancement to the Revised Reactor Oversight Process. However, at the present time, no decision has beenmade in that regard pending further development and evaluation. Your comments on the concept and usefulness of RBPI, will be considered in planning future work on RBPIs. We are planning to brief the ACRS on the white paper on April 5,2000 and the Commission in June 2000. We are currently developing RBPIs using the process described in the white paper. The preliminary results of this development efforts should be ready for stakeholder review and comment in July 2000.
Prior to briefing the Commission, we would like to hold a public meeting to discuss your comments and insights on the white paper. We will contact you soon to select a data and time for this meeting.
